So last night, a new Zambian show called Fever premiered on Zambezi Magic (Channel 160). I was looking forward to it coz of all the hype but also because it had some really good actors in it. So let’s get into it.

So there’s this rich guy, Rex, with a wife and a son, Taonga and a niece, Dumbani. Now Taonga is a good guy and has a bae (I hate this word by the way) who is a rich girl too. They’re even engaged and all that serious stuff, which I don’t get coz he’s still in college. They are a power couple, according to the narrator. Taonga’s best friend Fletcher is a smart-mouthed nerd who is the third wheel to the relationship posting up videos and updates about the relationship on social media.

It seems Uncle Rex has some secrets he would like to stay hidden coz a woman called Masozi got out of prison after 23 years and he is scared as hell. Masozi looks angry dude, like she’s got some mayhem to release on this earth. She’s out for revenge for something that they won’t tell us yet.  She gets info on Uncle Rex from a former cell mate and goes to pay him a visit. She inquires about her baby. Apparently she had left a baby on the outside when she got incarcerated. Uncle Rex tells her that the baby died from measles ages ago. She mourns for a bit but realises that it could be a lie and so goes back to Rex’s house. There she gets info that her daughter is alive and is our narrator. See Masozi, your daughter grew up to be a narrator in a TV show, how cool is that? I’m kinda excited to see what type of mayhem Masozi will bring. And I’m here wondering what Uncle Rex did to her that makes him antsy like that.

So uncle Rex has a cousin called Mwisho. A poor guy who pushes a Zamcab for a living. He has a daughter called Mapalo who is quite a smart-mouth. They are having all sorts of money problems like school fees and rent till they get evicted. Mapalo keeps telling her dad to take her to rich Uncle Rex’s place but Mwisho is so reluctant. I think it has something to do with the past. What did these guys do? Coz they seem to have a nasty past. Mwisho keeps warning Uncle Rex not to touch Mapalo. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. So Mapalo finally moves to Uncle Rex’s place and his wife is not happy about it. I saw that coming though. Some women don’t like sneaking up on them and bringing unexpected guests.

Now for the part that has got me in a twist. Mwaka and Richard is this couple that will do anything to survive. He sleeps with rich older women to get money and she sleeps with anyone who has enough money to meet her needs. Their ultimate goal? To move ku mayardi (surburbs).  So Richard hooks Mwaka up with this big guy who’s willing to pay 1000 kwacha. She’s ecstatic. So they’re seated in the car and they’ve done the deed and she asks for her money and dude is like I gave the money to Richard. She tries to make noise about it but he slams her face into the dashboard and whips out a gun. Mwaka gets out of the car and runs for her life. She’s probably like I aint gonna die, not today. The guy shoots at her once but misses.

As she’s running, she finds Taonga and his girlfriend all cozied up in a car along the road. She tries to get them to help her but Taonga’s girlfriend is like “You caught us at a bad time”. Whaat? When is it ever a bad time to help someone? I don’t feel bad about what will happen to her relationship. It’s a ka mini karma making the rounds. Anyway so later on Taonga goes to a kanthemba on his way home and finds Mwaka trying to get a hold of her boyfriend. They get talking and he ends up taking her to his house (he lives with his parents y’all). She tells him her boyfriend beat her up and he nurses her wounds and there is all sorts of chemistry going on. Dude, you just met her minutes ago!! She spends the night at his place and leaves in the morning. Guess who saw everything? Yep, the maid. Maids know things you guys. So be careful how you treat them.

It turns out Richard used up all their savings to buy an old second-hand car and Mwaka aint happy about it. She meets up with Taonga and his friend Fletcher. Fletcher does not like her at all. He can see through her and warns Taonga but he aint listening. Fletcher doesn’t quit with the snide remarks though and they would have been hilarious if I didn’t like Mwaka. Yeah, trust me to always like the dysfunctional character. Taonga listens to Mwaka’s sob story and even offers to give her rent money. Mwaka tries to refuse the money but I’m looking at her from the top of my specs with a smile and I’m like Girrrrlll, I know that trick, well played lady. Just when she’s about to get the money, Richard comes along to ruin things but Mwaka being an expert in these things says Richard is her brother. By now we all know that Taonga is whipped by a part of the female body I will not mention so no amount of clues thrown at his face will make him see Mwaka for who she is. He gives her the rent money without a fuss. Guys, please help me locate a guy like Taonga. I tried using google maps but I am not getting anywhere. I am broke and a gullible rich young man could come in handy. I don’t feel sorry for Taonga though.

So Masozi confronts Uncle Rex about Dumbani being her daughter and she threatens him. Last scene shows him bringing her to his house and telling his wife that Masozi is here to stay and she will be the new maid. Whaaat?!! See, this is why I wouldn’t want to be a trophy wife. Dude just brings his blackmailer into the house and the wife can’t say anything about it.

I can’t wait for the next episode next week. I so want to see what will go down. How will Masozi interact with the wife and the old maid? Will Taonga keep being dumb? Will he dump his girlfriend? I can’t wait. Oh and I can’t wait to see Uncle Rex. I think he’s good looking and I have a mini crush on him. Because I might have a thing for older guys with salt and pepper hair and beard or not, I don’t know yet.

What I liked about the Show

  • It is directed by a woman (Becky Ngoma). That is major awesome. I am always excited and inspired when I see women doing things excellently. It allows little girls to believe that they actually do have options in real life and not just in theory.
  • It has a narrator. Some people might not like that about the show but I like it. Mainly because it adds a different feel to the show. But also because I lowkey would want a narrator for my own life. Especially the times when I’m seated on my throne (you know the throne I’m talking about) each morning, plotting how my day will go. Yeah, a narrator would be nice.
  • It has real kisses. I’ve seen very few Zambian shows where the chemistry is real and is followed up with a kiss. So it’s nice that this one is not afraid to go there. There is no heavy stuff though, just the safe ones. It probably would have to be rated 18 for them to include that. Anyway, I like kissing (who doesn’t)
  • It has a balanced mixture of English and Bemba/Nyanja. For once I didn’t have to read the subtitles coz I know the languages they are speaking. I was ecstatic, you don’t understand.
