I saw the Facebook event some weeks ago. It said that there would be over 80 South African wines ready to be tasted. So of course I did the right thing and set a reminder for the event. Last Friday came and it was time for the show. I dressed up eagerly and skipped to my ride. I was definitely going to enjoy this night. I was determined.
I got there and paid the entry fee. They gave me an empty wine glass, a price chart of all the exhibited wines and a pen. I excitedly walked straight to one of the tables and stretched out my hand to the guy with the red wine bottle. I tried to act like I do this all the time and told the guy to hurry up and pour me a drink before I got angry. I pulled back my hand, smiling because I had just gotten away with acting like an adult and I took my first sip. Gosh! I had forgotten that the reason I don’t take alcoholic beverages is because I dislike the taste. I value happiness but the taste of alcoholic beverages does not make my mouth happy. So why was I at a wine show when I don’t even like the taste? Simply because I like things. And I’ve got what we Zambians call chimpwena.
I contemplated pouring out the rest of the wine but I reminded myself just how much I had paid to get in. So I took it in one gulp and went to the next table. I thought the pretty-coloured wines would taste as pretty as they looked but boy was I wrong. So I decided to go round each table asking if any of them had any sweet wine but it seems sweet wine is not common in the wine world. I finally found a dessert wine on the Niel Joubert table. For the first time that night I felt like I hadn’t wasted my Friday night. Christine Marie First Kiss is really for people with a sweet tooth though, because it is very sweet. At the last table I visited called Lynx, I found another wine that was almost sweet. It was called the Viognier Tardio – Late Harvest. I liked it.
After an hour I was ready to head out. I walked out slightly tipsy but extremely satisfied with my finds. Now I know exactly what to buy. I bumped into a few friends that I hadn’t seen in a while so it was safe to say the night was a success.
Here are some pictures from the night. Enjoy.

Hahahaa I cn imagine u trying spit out the first bit of wine…. Its an acquired taste but the sweet ones are pretty good , was it a red wine u tried first?
It was a red wine. I don’t know why I thought it would be sweet though. Maybe coz everyone else was drinking it like it was nectar.
Hehehe yeah thought as much… Red is quite strong, am suprised there wasn’t much sweet wine….. Anyway white is some times safe… Lol n Rose (pinkish looking) rnt too bad either…
Thanks for that info. I’ll be steering away from the red wine from now onward.
Gosh! I need that right now! And yes sweet wine isn’t that common in the wine world. It’s almost as if,”the dryer the wine the more you look like you know what you’re doing” Lol! Don’t know who made that rule 🙂
lol, That rule needs to be gotten rid of. Sweet wine is not common at all. Imagine out of 80 wines, I only found 2. I’m glad I did. No more trial and error.
