The last week of July in Lusaka is usually characterized with the Annual Agricultural and Commercial show held in the Showgrounds along Great East Road. I remember when I was a child, my dad would take us to the show and we would have lots of candy floss and watch all sorts of performances. As I got older I became less and less interested in going to the show, until I completely stopped going. But in the last couple of years I have revived my interest and I even look forward to it every year but for different reasons this time.

I visited the show this year and I must say I enjoyed myself. So if you’re like me and would like to go to the show next year, here are some tips on how to make it a better experience for you.

Guide to the AACS

  • Wear comfortable shoes – The show grounds is a huge place and you will be doing a lot of walking. Comfort is a very high priority. Stay away from high heels and tight shoes. Stick to the comfortable shoes. I wore sneakers instead of pumps and with every step I congratulated myself for my gumption.
  • Keep Hydrated – Carry a water bottle or buy water in the grounds but whatever you do, just keep drinking water. Long walking, hot weather and a dehydrated human being are a recipe for fainting spells.
  • Carry a bag – Carry a bag big enough to fit all your purchases because you’re definitely going to buy a few things. You will also have a bunch of brochures from the stands you visit and they will all need to be carried somehow. Some stands have giveaways and I know no one wants to pass on a giveaway. So carry a comfortable bag like a backpack or a messenger bag. I carried a bag that doubles as shoulder bag and a backpack.
  • Carry enough money – There are so many things for sale so you will find yourself buying stuff. So make sure you have enough money with you. Most people are wary about carry huge sums of money so you can just carry a card so that when you need extra money you can just withdraw some more. Don’t worry there are ATMs scattered around the grounds.
  • Go on a weekday – The show runs from Wednesday to Monday. On Wednesday to Friday, the grounds not crowded. But on Friday to Monday, all the kids and their parents and everyone else comes out. So if you want to avoid the crowds, the first 3 days are the best.
  • Be Curious – Visit the stands that you don’t know anything about. Find out about their core business and how they affect you. Visit the stands of civil service offices that you normally would have a hard time going to. This is your chance to get information and services easily. And you don’t have to worry about the customer service because most of them are very nice in the stands (It must be the air).
