I recently visited the Chishimba falls in Kasama. The experience was awesome. It has now been added to my list of favorite destinations. If you want to travel there, here is what you should know.

Kasama is approximately 850 kilometers away from Lusaka. It is in the Northern province. You can travel from Lusaka to Kasama by bus from Intercity Bus terminal, or by plane or you can drive there in a private car.  When you get to Kasama, you can book a taxi to take you to Chishimba falls which is approximately 40 kms away from Kasama town.

The facilities are well organized. It has 2 toilet stalls for ladies and 2 for the gents which are quite clean.  The place has a restaurant where they prepare decent nshima dishes and a bar that stocks most of the common drinks. But if you are on a budget, you can buy your own food and drinks from Kasama town (They have a Shoprite outlet) and prepare your own meals.

The place has a number of built-in braai stands so you don’t have to cook on firewood directly if you don’t want to. The attendants are very helpful and they can help you gather firewood or buy charcoal for a reasonable tip.

The camping ground is reasonably safe. There is a guard available at all times even at night.

I wish they could build a few showers for people who prefer not to bath in the river or for times when it is difficult to bath in the river. On our second day, we have over 50 people that came to visit the falls just when we were about to bath in the river. Let’s just say they got more views than they paid for. So showers would really be a useful improvement to the place.

Things to Do

The Chishimba falls, on the Luombe river,  are a succession of 3 falls; Mutumuna falls, Kaela rapids and Chishimba falls. This makes for a lot of hiking. There are a lot of viewing points and a lot of climbing is involved.

You can also swim in the small dam that has been made right next to the camping spot. But be warned that it is at your own risk because there are no life guards around.

And if you’re up for it, you can drive back to Kasama and explore its night life which is really buzzing. Ask to be taken to Legacy Cocktail Club. You can thank me later.

How much to Pay

Camping fee is K33 per person per night. There is a charge for vehicles, K5 per vehicle per day.

Recommendations

  • The charging ports are not enough. There was one socket near the camping ground that wasn’t enough for everyone. So if you are traveling in a group, carry an extension cable.
  • Make sure you tip the people who work around National heritage sites. They are rarely ever paid and most of them survive on the tips.
  • Carry something warm to wear. The nights tend to be a bit chilly.
