It’s been long since I read a novel. It’s been even longer since I read a whole novel in one day. So when I went on my 2 week leave, one of my goals was to read as many novels as I could in that period. That brings me to this book. A few weeks ago, I was in town looking for furniture for my home office when I stopped by one of the many roadside book stalls. My main goal was just to scan what type of novels they had but I saw a book that looked sort of familiar and I have a weakness for cursive writing. I negotiated and pretended to walk away until the guy sold it to me for K20. When I got home I checked my bookshelf and discovered that the reason it had looked so familiar was because I had another book by the same author.

Katie Fforde Stately Pursuits
Stately Pursuits is a romance novel by Katie Fforde. I bought the other book, Artistic Licence, years ago so I couldn’t remember what her writing style was like. The story begins with a girl (Ketty) who finds her rich arrogant boyfriend in bed with another woman because that was his way of letting her know that he was leaving her. Of course what follows next is a broken heart and she is sent to housesit an old huge house for an ailing distant relative. She gets occupied with renovating the old house and she continuously butts heads with the young heir (Connor) who will inherit the place when the old man dies. He wants to pull down the whole thing while she thinks the house can be renovated and made into an income generating building.

Now Connor is quick tempered and not charming at all. He is tall, has a crooked nose and rugged features but not handsome at all. He turns out to be communication deficient because as time goes on he is heavily attracted to Ketty but says nothing besides being extremely angry with her. She in turn is extremely confused by his actions because one minute he’s kissing her, the next he’s shouting at her. Later in the book, Ketty leaves the house for another job and Connor follows her and declares his love at the very end of the book.

This book was quite difficult for me to get into. Mainly because of the writing style and the big words often used in the beginning. Or maybe it was because I was rusty and I hadn’t read a book in a long while. But I finally got into it and enjoyed a few parts. I must admit that I like to read a senseless romance novel occasionally, the same way I like to eat chocolate or really sweet biscuits. Really bad for my teeth but hey, it tastes so good. But this one was holding out on me and I felt somewhat irritated. I was irritated by the slow pace and by how unrealistic the man was made to look. I don’t think a man would be that incapable of telling a girl that he likes her. Well I haven’t met all the men in the world so I’m not an authority but it felt to me that the author was dragging things to meet the word count. Novels are supposed to have exaggerated, out of this world, romance stories but this story was so basic that even my love story is more interesting.

Anyway the novel reminded me of my dreams of living out of town, on a farm and living a simple and unhurried life. It would be such bliss and I would probably only come into town on weekends. For now, all I can do is dream though.

Have you read the book? Do you like romance novels or Nah? Are there any books you suggest I should read and review? Let me know. Thanks for reading.
