I’m sure you’ve all heard those love songs that talk about loving someone and hating them at very same time. As I get older I realise that it is very possible to love something and hate it simultaneously. Traveling has always been a dream of mine. I remember being 16 and making a bucket list. Most of the items had something to do with travel. I had these grand visions of traveling around Europe by train and bus.

Over 2 years ago, I found myself in a job that required me to travel around Zambia. I wasn’t really interested at first because my travel plans involved Europe, Zambia was nowhere on that bucket list. But I started traveling anyway because girl gotta eat.

Ntumbachushi falls

I remember the first trip was to the Eastern Province. It was in the rainy season so the vegetation was flourishing. That was the first time I fell in love with Zambia’s landscape. It was so green and vast. It was beautiful. I fell in love with traveling around Zambia and I suddenly wanted more of it.

Traveling brought a new zest to my life. It made me happy and content. Traveling around Zambia can be quite difficult sometimes but the landscapes and the waterfalls made up for it. But traveling brought a new challenge. It disrupted my exercise and diet routines. I had just settled into a workout program that was working really well for me and I had a great healthy living routine going. But it’s expensive to pay for gym membership when you’ll be away for half the month. It’s difficult to stick to a workout plan when you don’t know if you’ll be home next week or not. Weekly vegetable shopping was proving to be wasteful because I would be away half the week and the veggies would just rot. And I gained weight and worked out less and less.

I began to hate travel. I mean, it brought me so much happiness and poked at my curiosity but it was also bringing more kilos into my life. And so that’s my love/hate relationship with travel. I’m still trying to figure it out. I’m trying to find a balance. I’m reading articles on how to workout when traveling, I hope I learn a thing or two. But I’m sure I’ll figure it out, I always do. Besides, I can’t stop traveling even if I wanted to.
